Suriname's holiday celebrating the abolition of slavery. Its name comes from the Surinamese Creole and means "to break the chains".
July1 is Keti Koti, "cut the chains" in Sranan tongo, the commemoration of the abolition of slavery (since July1 , 1863). Music and parades take place all day along Waterkrant Avenue. Then it will happen in the gardens of the Palmeraie, which become for the occasion a place of celebration where dances, music and traditional dresses follow one another throughout the night... An intense moment and full of emotion, not to be missed under any circumstances if you are in Suriname at this time.
