Two imposing neighbouring religious buildings in Keizerstraat. Their proximity is a testament to the great tolerance of the Surinamese people. The synagogue is the older of the two buildings: it dates from 1897 and its architect, from Jerusalem, built the wooden floor, then covered it with river sand from Kolakreek. The mosque, on the other hand, was built in 1988, after permission had been sought from the owners of the old synagogue.
