ROCKBARON CASTLE
12th century castle in altitude with a view of the Loire valley, offering animations and demonstrations of birds of prey flights.
Perched on a rocky outcrop, Château de Rochebaron rises to an altitude of 653 meters, offering splendid panoramic views over the Loire Valley. Access is via a footpath. Allow 20 to 25 minutes for the walk. Remember to bring good shoes and water in summer. A small bar serves drinks at the château. Three-quarters of the path is tarmac, making it suitable for baby carriages. The château has been listed as a Monument Historique since 1954. Its history is closely linked to the de Rochebaron family, who remained in possession of the fortress from its construction until 1434. The castle was besieged a few years earlier, and was sold from then on, passing from one family to another until the early 19th century. Guided tours take you back in time, to the fortified walls that once defended the border between Auvergne and Forez. Mâchicoulis, ramparts, loopholes and three towers, the tallest of which (25 metres), are waiting to be explored. And that's not all: at the aviary, you'll be able to watch interactive and educational demonstrations of birds of prey, presented by passionate falconers. You can also take a walk with birds of prey, and even learn more about them on a discovery course. Little ones are sure to enjoy this trip back to the time of the knights! Birthday parties for 6-11 year olds can also be organized on site.
