The National Mosque of Malaysia was built in 1965. Masjid Jamek was getting too small. The result of the collaboration of a British architect and two Malaysian architects, it incorporates many symbols of Islam and a Malaysia in the making. This concrete structure is decorated with stained glass windows and calligraphic elements. The open umbrella dome represents a star with 18 branches, 13 for each of the Malaysian states and 5 for the pillars of Islam. The minaret, in the form of a closed umbrella, is 73 m high.
