A 100 m high mast has been installed in this large square to fly the Malaysian flag. It is here - the padang, once a show of the settlers' sporting feats - that independence (merdeka in Malaysian) was proclaimed in 1957. Going around the square from the south, you pass in front of the Royal Selangor Club, in the Tudor style, where the English used to meet and where Malaysian high society now meets. Women are still not allowed to enter, and men are still required to wear very British clothing.
