SRI MAHA MARIAMAN TEMPLE
This Hindu temple, the oldest in Georgetown, is an example of the religious diversity of Penang. Typical of southern India, this massive temple represents Mount Meru, that is, the cosmic mountain that supports the heavens. In the temple, immediately visible from the entrance, stands the black statue of the Sri Maha Mariaman with white eyes. It has a trident and is protected by two monstrous guards in the genus Kali. Before the altar it awaits its mount, an animal of stone, half-sphinx mi-sphinx. Right in the entrance is the nine sacred statues of nine gods representing the nine constellations of Hindu astrology. This temple is the starting point for the procession of the Thaïpusam festival, but the famous gold statue decorated with precious stones by Lord Subramanian (son of Shiva) is not there. It remains hidden in a similarly hidden sanctuary of Lebuh Penang that it leaves only during the celebrations. It is then carried in procession to the Chettiar Temple in Cascades Road.
