SNAKE TEMPLE
The snake temple is just a nickname, its real name being the Temple of the Azure Cloud. The building was once located in the middle of the Sungei Kluang fields. It was built in 1873 in honour of Chor Soo Kong, the patron saint of fishermen in the region. It is now honoured less by fishermen than by the sick. The saint has a reputation for being a highly effective healer if you know how to pray to him. His statue stands in the main room with, in front of it, at each end of a kind of counter, small bushes in which sleep about ten green and yellow snakes, crotales (pit vipers). In the middle of the counter shine hen eggs, intended not for visitors, but for snakes that swallow them at night. It is said that in January, February and around July, for the saint's two birthdays, vipers gather in very large numbers. This phenomenon makes the temple unique in the world. On the right, on the side, the statue of the god of Hell judges the dead. Curiously, some Chinese call it Hades, as in Greek tradition, but its real Chinese name is Por Thor Kong. On the left, facing each other, the goddess of births. In the large room on the right, there are still snakes, but these are automatically put around your neck, it seems they have been drugged... Then, you wait patiently, with the bug in a scarf, for the official photographer to take his shot. For a few ringgits, you will receive your portrait at your hotel!
