CHEONG FATT TZE MANSION
Cheong Fatt Tze (1840-1916), a Chinese business magnate, built a vast business empire in Southeast Asia. He settled in Penang in 1890. He had a large house built to house his eight wives, concubines, eight sons and six daughters and the staff. Construction began in 1896 and was completed in 1904 in accordance with the rules of feng shui. This sumptuous property reflects the traditional Chinese heritage in architecture and furniture. The two-storey house, with its deep indigo blue painted walls, stands in the middle of a small garden. The visitor enters through a portal topped by a Chinese tile pagoda roof. The house has three buildings connected to each other by internal corridors. The one in the centre houses the reception rooms and its facade includes a large balcony on the first floor. It is also the most decorated part, with glazed terracotta elements, openwork wooden ornaments, painted tiles and impressive chinoiseries. The interiors are equally intriguing and well preserved. They bear witness to a forgotten art of living. The rooms are arranged around patios with turned columns. The lights are hidden in old red paper lanterns. The door tops are decorated with perforated screens that allow air to circulate and ventilate the rooms. It is fortunate that this treasure has been preserved. Scenes from the film Indochina were even shot there. The guided tour is mandatory and lasts 45 minutes.
