This cultural center offering a variety of events and activities was built around the tomb of Princess Mahsuri. A sad story, embellished by legend. In the early 19th century, the princess married the man of her heart, but the war with the kingdom of Siam forced him to leave for the front. Her mother-in-law, jealous of her great beauty, accused her of adultery once her son had left. However much the young woman denied the accusations, the villagers were incensed and condemned her. Tied to a tree, she was stabbed with a kriss and spilled white blood, a sign of her innocence. Before dying, she cast a spell over the island and its inhabitants, predicting disasters over seven generations: white calves would be born of black buffalo, a beach would turn black (Pasir Hitam) and the island would be razed to the ground. Indeed, during the first decades of the 19th century, the Thais set about razing the island to the ground, and the princess's main accuser was murdered. However, the power of this curse dissipated on December 31, 1986, and the following day the Prime Minister granted the island free port status. Since then, the island has been developing frenetically, and its insolent health has provoked some jealousy elsewhere in the country. The tomb, now a place of pilgrimage, is made of white marble. At the bottom of the garden, a well once dug by her never runs dry, even in the harshest seasons. Sprinkle with its water for good luck. At the end of the garden, you'll find a beautiful traditional house.
