This state mosque was built under the impetus of the Sultan of Johor Ibrahim who wanted to pay tribute to his father. The construction started in 1892 and was completed in 1900. The architect, a Malay, was inspired by the English colonial architecture by mixing some elements of Moorish inspiration. The four octagonal minarets that surround the prayer hall are its most distinctive elements and are inspired by British clock towers.
