The airport was named after the 28th Sultan of Kelantan, who reigned from 1979 to 2010. It has excellent connections to Kuala Lumpur (KLIA and KLIA2), Johor Baru, Penang, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching. There is also an international connection to Singapore. It is served by Air Asia, Malaysia Airlines, Firefly and Scoot. Kota Bharu is the destination of choice for the Perhentian Islands and for avoiding long hours on the road.
