The Chesed-El Synagogue has been recently renovated. Probably one of the most beautiful in Asia, it is classified as a national monument of Singapore. It was founded in 1905 by the philanthropist Sir Manasseh, a great Jewish businessman who devoted much of his life to building colleges and universities. He was even asked by Albert Einstein in 1922 to found a Jewish university. His commitment and generosity contributed greatly to the development of education in South Asia, and he was knighted in 1929 by George V.
