MASJID SULTAN (MOSQUE)
Singapore's most impressive mosque, inviting you to discover the Kampong Glam district.
In Kampong Glam, it is difficult to miss the Sultan's Mosque with its imposing golden dome and four minarets topped with octagonal platforms. It is the most majestic mosque in Singapore. Its construction began in 1824 thanks to a donation from Sultan Hussein Shah de Johor and the East India Company. It will last 2 years. But a century later, it began to collapse and was completely rebuilt in 1928. The imposing gold-covered dome was added at that time. It is based on a structure entirely made of bottle ends. This is the contribution of the poorest Muslims to the construction of the mosque. Even today, the Sultan's Mosque is one of the largest in Singapore. The prayer room can accommodate 5,000 faithful. The best time to visit it is on Friday afternoon, just after prayer time when Muslims wearing the white cap and folding their red carpets spread out on the marble floor, while women are gathered in a corner in the back. Proper clothing is required. No shorts for men and a covering outfit for women is required. Asking permission to take pictures is always better.
Ramadan is the best time to visit Kampong Glam and the mosque. Within the mosque grounds and in the surrounding streets, hundreds of vices sell excellent food from sunset. It is there that at nightfall, Muslims come to break the fast.
