Inaugurated on April 4, 1878, Maghain Aboth ("the shield of our fathers") is the oldest synagogue in Singapore and Southeast Asia. The synagogue was originally a single-storey building until a second-floor balcony was added. The balcony is reserved for female members of the community during prayer services. A covered porch faces the building and leads to the vestibule originally designed for horse-drawn carriages. Today, it is the main place of worship for Singapore's Jewish community.
