The Civilian War Memorial in Singapore, also known as the "Memorial to the Civilian Victims of the Japanese Occupation", was erected in 1964 in memory of the 50,000 Singaporeans killed in World War II. This 67-meter high monument is also known among Singaporeans as "the two pairs of chopsticks", because of the four pillars shaped like Chinese chopsticks. They symbolize the four main "races" - Malay, Chinese, Tamil and "other" - united at the base and converging at one point.
