The Chettiars (inhabitants of Chettinad in Tamil Nadu) belong to a line of great merchants and financiers. In 1859, the Singapore community built a temple dedicated to Sri Thendayuthapani, also known as Lord Murugan. The gopuram can be seen at the entrance. The main altar is dedicated to the Murugan, whose statue can be seen flanked on the right by his elder brother Ganesha and on the left by one of his disciples, Idumbar. An altar is also dedicated to Shiva and his consort Parvati. This temple is the arrival point for Thaipusam processions.
