A true Singapore icon, the half-lion, half-fish statue spitting water into the bay attracts tourists from all over the world. But what's so special about this statue? It's a bit like Brussels' Manneken Pis, the symbol of a city, found in all its forms in souvenir stores. Created in 1964 as a logo for the Singapore Tourism Board, the Merlion recalls the legend of Sang Nila Umata's sighting of a creature on the city-state's present site. A replica also dominates Sentosa Island.
