The Tekka Centre is a must in the district, where you can meet Chinese-speaking Tamils, Tamil-speaking Chinese and Malays. Here you can eat, shop, buy Sri Lankan vegetables and crabs, electronics, clothes, Chinese pharmacopoeia and even have a tailor-made suit made for you during the day. Built in 1915, the Tekka Centre was then known as the Kandang Kerbau Market(kerbau means buffalo in Malay). The Tekka Centre has occupied its current location since 1982 and was renovated in 2023.
