Tan Yeok Nee, originally from Teochew, made his fortune in the pepper and gambier trade. In 1885, he built himself a superb house. It is the only one of its kind in Singapore. It features large granite columns and a number of beautiful sculptures imported from China. After Tan Yeok Nee's death, the house had a motley crew of owners: a stationmaster, a bishop, the boarders of a girls' school and even the Japanese army during the occupation, then the Salvation Army.
