THE ISTANA (PALACE)
The residence of the President of the Republic of Singapore was formerly the residence of the British Governor during the colonial period. It was built in 1869 on a vast nutmeg plantation. The neoclassical style building is inspired by the Colosseum in Rome, although this is not immediately obvious. The style is Tuscan on the second floor, Ionic on the second and the tower is Corinthian. The estate is perfectly maintained and has a rose garden and a nine-hole golf course. The estate also houses Sri Temasek, the residence of the Prime Minister.
