Jalan Besar means Great Street in Malay, Jalan means street and Besar means great. It separates the districts of Kampong Glam and Little India. This street has been on Singapore's map since the 1880s. You have to imagine whole areas covered with nipah at the time. Today, it is lined with shophouses of different styles. We find the Straits Eclectic (eclecticism of the Strait) of the early 20th century or Art Deco. In Peranakan culture, pink is a sign of luck, green represents spring, permanence and peace.
