PADANG
The Padang(padang means field in Malay) is a large field in the heart of Singapore. In 1852, the Singapore Cricket Club set up shop at the left-hand end of the Padang. Reserved for Europeans at the time, it remains one of Singapore's most select clubs. In 1885, the Eurasians decided to create their own club at the other end, called the Singapore Recreation Club. But nothing remains of the original building. It has been replaced by a modern marble structure with a green roof. Cricket matches are still played from time to time on Sundays.
