The Alliance française de Maurice was the first to be created in the world (in 1884, just after the foundation of this institution in Paris in 1883). The objective at the time was to safeguard the current use of the French language in a country under English rule but predominantly French-speaking. The Alliance's current headquarters is located near Port Louis. Its buildings house a large media library with more than 75,000 books in French (+ periodicals), as well as a cyber space. All year round: French courses, workshops (painting, theatre, etc.) and various events (exhibitions, film screenings, conferences, etc.).
Other branches in Goodlands, Mahébourg, Rivière Noire, Souillac and Triolet and also on Rodrigues Island
