THE MUNICIPAL THEATRE
Theater built on the site of the old market of Port-Louis by the French architect Poujade
Built on the site of the old market of Port-Louis by the French architect Poujade, inaugurated in 1822 by the first British governor of the island, it is one of the oldest theaters in the Southern Hemisphere, in the Italian style. During the 19th and 20th centuries, it hosted French-speaking theatrical and lyrical troupes. A symbol of Port Louis' cultural past, it is currently undergoing "slow" renovation, and it is not known when this national heritage building will be able to open its doors again and let its magnificent dome resound.
