SAINT-FRANCOIS-D'ASSISE CHURCH
This church, with its stone walls and overturned ship's hull, is the oldest church on the island
The walls are made of ashlar and the frame is shaped like the hull of an overturned boat. Nothing to be ashamed of, but it is the oldest church on the island, dating from 1756. Some interesting graves lie in the cemetery: that of René Magon, governor of the colony from 1756 to 1759; that of Abbé Buonavita, Napoleon's chaplain in St Helena (in Mauritius from 1828 to 1833); and that of Baudelaire's "Creole lady", Emmeline de Carcenac, wife of Adolphe Autard de Bragard.
