The words written on the façade of this former dispensary admirably transformed into a restaurant set the tone: Karay Mario, simmered memories. Here we are in Mario's den, a former tourist who realizes his dream of a beautiful table of authentic local cuisine inspired by recipes of the past. Here, there is no menu, the daily menu is elaborated according to the products available from local farmers, fishermen and producers - a way to tell the story of the culinary heritage. The setting, the decoration, the flavors, the atmosphere make this place an institution. A favorite address!

A definite must if you are in Mahebourg, else it is well worth the drive. Great place for lunch, authentic mauritian cuisine. The old building has been nicely decorated to keep the old days vibe. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff. The owner just make you feel at home.

Mario gives the choice of mains from a limited daily menu, so you know they’re using fresh produce. We had the option of a Porc, Chicken, or Fish curry.
The curry came with rice, salad, lentils, and chutneys (coconut, radish pickles, and chilli). Each of the curries cost 600rs, which sounds expensive, but is well justified by the taste, quality, quantity, and atmosphere.

There may or may not be a vegetarian option - we didn’t ask about this when we went nor were we advised.

The food was fantastic, would recommend.

As a black man(African American) visiting Mauritius for my bday, I've found a number of establishments are simply unwelcoming to black people. This being one of them. From intro to exit, it was as if they were saying hurry up and buy????. My money was welcomed tho? Food and presentation was decent. The service the opposite. It's unfortunate.
