UNESCO BIOSPHERE BEL OMBRE
Biosphere located at high altitude, home to beautiful endemic trees such as the banana wood and rare endemic birds
Unique in Mauritius, this biosphere classified by Unesco since 1977 extends over 3 594 hectares at the level of the primary forest of Macchabée. Unlike many other natural areas in Mauritius, its difficult access has favored the protection of its ecosystems (forests, swamps, moors ...). It is thus one of the rare forest areas to have preserved its original Jurassic aspect. Located in altitude, it conceals beautiful endemic trees like the banana wood(ochna mauritiana) or the rosin(canarium paniculatum) and rare endemic birds.
