Marine protected area of 35 km² extending from Mourouk Bay to the Grande Passe via the Hermitages Islands in Port Sud-Est
Created in 2005, the Marine Biodiversity Conservation Project is a 35 km2 marine protected area stretching from Mourouk Bay to Grande Passe via Hermitage, Chat and Plate islands. Initially co-financed by the State and foreign funds, its aim is to protect the exceptional biodiversity of this part of Rodrigues, which boasts over 1,000 species of endemic coral and fish, as well as several new species. Emblematic of this marine wealth is the pomacentrus rodriguensis, a fish unique in the world, and named Rodrigues for the occasion.
