SAINT MARCELLIN'S ABBEY
Saint-Marcellin Abbey in Chanteuges with a renovated vaulted nave with capitals and a chapel of Saint Anne.
Founded in 936 by Cunebert, provost of the chapter, this priory is worth a visit for its 44 capitals, some of which are attributed to the Mozac workshop. They feature sheep carriers, usurer's torture, mermaids, griffins and other characters common to the decorative vocabulary of Auvergne. It was restored and enlarged at the end of the 15th century on the initiative of Jacques de Sennecterre: renovation of the nave vault, opening of new bays, partial reconstruction of the cloister. The rib-vaulted Sainte-Anne chapel features flamboyant windows and doors.
