RABIDA MONASTERY
Monastery with a church housing one of the oldest sculptures of Christ crucified in Palos.
In 1490, Christopher Columbus found refuge in this monastery after learning that the Catholic Monarchs refused to support his voyage to the Indies. Juan Perez, superior of the monastery and confessor of Queen Isabel, was instrumental in influencing her to change her mind. Inside, its church houses one of the oldest sculptures of the crucified Christ and the frescoes painted by Daniel Vázquez Díaz in 1930 evoke the life of Columbus and the discovery of the New World. Its Mudejar cloisters are also noteworthy.
