TORRE DE LA HIGUERA
One of the watchtowers built in the 16th century in Matalascañas.
What we see today appears to be nothing more than a huge boulder stuck in the sea, but it's in fact the foundations of the tower, overturned. It was one of the many watchtowers built in the 16thcentury to act as a beacon, but also as a refuge at a time when the coast was constantly visited by pirates or privateers coveting cargo returning from the Americas. Of the dozen or so towers still preserved, this one has become a tourist icon in Spain, also known as Peña.
