ALCÁZAR DE JEREZ
Almohad fortress with beautiful patios, gardens and Arab baths, and no less than thirteen towers
You enter via a beautiful square near the cathedral, brightened up by jacarandas from South America bearing pretty mauve flowers. This well-restored 11th-century Almohad fortress boasts beautiful patios, gardens and Arab baths, and boasts no fewer than thirteen towers, the best preserved of which are the Homenaje and Octogonal. In 1264, when Alfonso X the Wise reconquered the city, the Homenaje tower was converted into a royal residence and the mosque became the chapel of Santa María la Real. From its tower, the Palacio Villavicencio offers a good view of the city; recently refurbished, it contains a cámara oscura (dark room), which enhances the panoramic view of the city, always an interesting way to discover Jerez.
