It stands at the foot of the hill where Malaga's two fortresses, the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro Castle, are located. Built in the time of Augustus, this Roman theater was used until the 3rdcentury . With the arrival of the Arabs, however, it was used as a quarry for new buildings, notably the Alcazaba, where numerous Roman capitals and column shafts from this theater were reused. It was discovered in 1951 when the garden adjoining the Maison de la Culture was being landscaped, and the house was demolished when the archaeologists realized the importance of their discovery. Although the excavations are not yet complete, almost all the elements of the theater have been uncovered (entrance to the proscenium or stage, orchestra area, access door...). And it is now authorized to host theatrical performances, which generally take place in the summer in exceptional surroundings. You can also visit its interpretation center, where you can learn about the life and customs of the Hispania Romana.
