RUSSIAN MUSEUM OF MALAGA
An early 20th century building in a former tobacco factory offering a long-term permanent exhibition
Housed in a former tobacco factory, the Tabacalera, an early 20th-century building, it is the Malaga branch of the Russian Museum of St. Petersburg, which since its creation in March 2015 has become one of the reference centers for Russian culture in Western Europe. The museum's main focus is a long-term permanent exhibition, renewed each year, featuring some one hundred works from the 15th to the 20th century, organized around nine themes: early Russian art, the 18th century, Romanticism in Russia, Realism, Russian Realism, Soviet Realism and the art of the "Thaw" period to reflect the post-Stalin era. Works range from Byzantine-inspired icons to monumental pieces of Soviet realism, but there are also paintings by Repin, Kandinsky, Tatlin, Rodchenko and Chagall. The museum's second priority is to host temporary exhibitions, announced on its website. The center includes projection rooms, an auditorium, a reading room and a virtual branch, all designed to introduce visitors to Russian art.
