SOHAIL CASTLE
A castle located at the mouth of the Fuengirola River on a small hill from which you can see the coast and the Sierra de Mijas
Situated at the mouth of the Rio Fuengirola, on a small hill overlooking the coast and the Sierra de Mijas, this castle was built at the request of Abderraman III in 956. It was the birthplace of the philosopher and writer Abderramán Ben Ahmed Alhasam Sohailén, in the 12thcentury . It has undergone numerous reconstructions, including one in Carlos' time and another in the 18thcentury . Today, it retains a few sections of its ancient walls, a square enclosure, small turrets and a keep, torre del homenaje, at its center. The latest renovations carried out by the town council have turned it into a cultural center hosting numerous concerts, as well as the Fuengirola town festival, from late July to early August, and the medieval market in August. Its privileged location also makes it an excellent vantage point for beautiful views of the coastline, marked by the Mijas mountain range.
