Renaissance style cathedral with a central silver tabernacle and 2 colossal organ cases

It was built on the site of the Great Mosque at the wish of Isabel the Catholic. Work began in 1523, but the last stone was not laid until 1704. The main architects were Diego de Siloé and Alonso Cano. Of its many facades, the oldest, in Renaissance style, is the one to the east (puerta del Colegio). It was designed by Diego de Siloé, as were the north facade and its two doors (puerta del Perdón and puerta de San Jerónimo). The main façade (1667), by Alonso Cano, is to the south. Inside (what a contrast with the outside!), there are five naves surrounded by chapels, with an ambulatory behind the Capilla Mayor. The luminosity is particularly striking! The Capilla Mayor, all in white and gold, is one of the gems of Spanish architecture, with its splendid stained-glass windows. Semicircular in plan, it is 45 m high. The central tabernacle is in silver on a green marble base. In the central nave, there are two colossal organ cases. Maríana Pineda and Alonso Cano are buried here. In the evening, the plaza Correo Viejo, near the forecourt, is often the setting for concerts or meetings with young acrobats.

Even if the cathedral is not a visit " obligatoire" in Granada, you can come and enjoy the atmosphere that reigns here. The walls are decorated with several woodcarvings, the organ are majestic and the columns is really impressive, freshness of the cathedral is always appreciated in summer.
Not to be missed, the building is imposing, inside, you can admire two magnificent organ face-to-face dating from the 18th century. Pulpits of sermon are made of carved stone all and a remarkable finesse. The various designed around the central dome and gilded saints are remarkable.
