On September 6 and 9, Guadix and Baza will playfully stage a rivalry through the pursuit of Cascamorras.
This battle between the two towns is about the possession of the Virgin of Piedad, which finally remains in Baza. It is fought in two stages. Every 6th of September, the Cascamorras, a sort of jester dressed as a juggler, goes to Guadix to recover the Virgin. The inhabitants of Baza prevent him from doing so by throwing paint at him during frantic races through the town. When he returns to Guadix without the Virgin, the inhabitants are angry. And the same punishment. Painting and water are the main elements of this festival, which is lived with fervour by the inhabitants of both towns.
