ROMAN THEATRE
Romanesque theater preserving its integral structure and the decorative paintings adorning its proscenium
Discovered in 2007 during work carried out in a car park, this Roman theatre built in 25 AD, under the order of Emperor Tiberius, could accommodate up to 3,500 spectators. What he did for 300 years. It is one of the few theatres to have kept almost its entire structure and the decorative paintings that adorn its foreground. It is also the only Greek theatre in Andalusia to be located in the ancient Roman province of Tarraconense, all the others being in the Betica (Malaga, Cadiz, Italica...). Archaeological excavations have uncovered part of the stage, the orchestra, the bleachers and some structures of the access portico. And new excavations are underway to rediscover his front garden. But there is still much to discover in this 6,000 square metre area.
