In July 2020, it was declared a Unesco Global Geopark. Located in the northern half of the province of Granada, it covers an area of 4,722 km², divided into 47 municipalities, belonging to the regions of Guadix, Baza, Huéscar and Montes. Of particular note is its landscape of ravines and badlands, like a "little" Grand Canyon, but with the addition of geologically interesting sites such as the Galera seismic outcrops, the Baza fault and the Castilléjar gypsum, to name but a few (70 sites in all). It's one of the few natural areas in Europe to boast such features. During your stay, you can enjoy a wide range of nature-related activities (hiking, kayaking, etc.), as well as discovering paleontological sites such as the Fardes river valley in Fonelas, the Orce river basin (the oldest tooth) and the Castellón Alto site in Galera. Other not-to-be-missed sights include troglodyte houses and viewpoints (six in all), the highest of which is the Peza viewpoint, offering superb views of the Sierra Nevada, while the second offers views of the sea rocks of the Fardes river valley. Maps are available from tourist offices to help you identify and locate the various sites. You can also access a wealth of information (how to get there, what to visit, activities, etc.) on the local website.
