If it was once an almost impregnable fortress, only a few parts of its walls and towers remain today, visible in the historic city centre, overlooking the old medina. They bear witness to three phases of construction: the first in the 10th and 12th centuries, the second in the Nazi era and the third in the Christian era of the 16th century.
