ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF GALERA
Museum presenting objects found in excavations throughout the region.
Inaugurated in 2001, this museum, located in the former monastery of the Monjas del Rey Cristo, displays objects from excavations carried out throughout the region. And covering many periods, the Copper and Bronze Age, but also the remains of the various occupations, Iberian, Roman, Visigothic and Muslim, the oldest dating back more than 4,500 years. A region particularly rich in deposits as evidenced by the Iberian necropolis of Tútugi, on the Cerro Real, which shelters different types of tombs. It was here that the Lady of Galera, a Phoenician figurine from the 7th century BC, was found, probably representing the goddess Astarte. Made of alabaster, this statue sitting between two sphinxes holds a bowl in which she pours a liquid through the two holes in her chest. In Galera, you will only see one copy since the original is on display at the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid. On the other hand, you can discover the originals of the tombs discovered in November 2002 in the Castellón alto deposit, as well as their inhabitants, in a partially mummified state, but very well preserved.
