SAN JUAN DISTRICT
The richest quarter of the medieval city with the church of San Juan
Before the reconquest, it was the richest part of the medieval city, with houses, shops, bread ovens, public baths, mill and mosque, in the place of the current San Juan church. After the reconquest in 1489, most of the Moorish population remained there, which earned it the name of morería. A stroll will allow you to discover two significant examples of 16th century civil architecture. The first one is on the Plaza de los moriscos, a building known as "houses of the breasts" in reference to the decoration of its façade that evokes them. The other is located in Plaza de San Juan with two Mudéjar houses whose facade retains its original silhouette with its wooden balconies, "balcón de palo".
