TORREPAREDONES ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK
The most important complex in the province of Cordoba, a place that was an Iberian enclave, Roman and finally a military zone
22 km from Baena, this site is also known as Torre de las virgenes or Castro el viejo. And from an archaeological point of view, it is the most important complex in the province of Córdoba. This place was first an Iberian and then a Roman enclave, and finally a military zone in the Middle Ages. It was not until 1883 that the first deposits were found, showing a settlement dating back at least 3,500 years, from the copper age to the early Middle Ages. It was during the Iberian and Roman periods that the place reached its maximum splendour, having been equipped since the 6th century BC with a powerful wall, reinforced with towers and surrounding an area of 10 ha. It is from this period that the most significant remains come from, including the sanctuary, located to the south of the park. The visit also allows you to discover the eastern gate, an old access point to the city, and the remains of a Roman city: the forum, the market, the thermal baths or the decumanus maximus. Today, it is thought that it could be the Ituci Virtus Italia, mentioned by Pliny in the Conventus Astigitanus. Many excavations are still ongoing and the archaeologists concerned believe that they should be very productive, a reason to return regularly. At the end of the visit, do not miss the viewpoint which guarantees you a magnificent view of the campiña cordobesa: 32 villages are visible, as well as Córdoba, when the weather is clear.
