CHURCH NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LA ASUNCION Y ANGELES
One of the little jewels of Cabra that occupies the center of the Plaza de la Villa Vieja, the church dedicated to Santa Maria de Los Angeles
This is one of Cabra's little jewels, occupying the center of the Plaza de la Villa Vieja. Inside, you'll find the famous red marble from the Sierra de Cabra, which is very present in this church. It was built in the Middle Ages, on the site of a former mosque in al-Andalus, and was dedicated to Santa María de Los Ángeles in 1241, the date of Fernando III's reconquest of the city. Marble and its Muslim structure can be seen at , in the 44 columns supporting the barrel vaults of its five naves, and in the large altarpiece (in red and black marble), the latter the work of Melchor de Aguirre (1674), based on a project by the architect and altarpiece designer José Granados de la Barrera, himself a native of Cabra.
