THE SIERRA ALHAMILLA

Not far from there, the Sierra Alhamilla, which belongs to the Betic Cordilleras, is an oasis of vegetation, surrounded by arid plains that extend over about 8,500 hectares. It is a natural parallel, a protected natural area, which extends to the municipalities of Nijar, Almeria and Tabernas. To the northwest of Gergal, in Aulago, in the Sierra de Filabres, the Observatorio de Calar Alto is an important German-Spanish astronomical observatory.
