Oasis of vegetation with an important Spanish-German astronomical observatory
The Sierra Alhamilla, which belongs to the Betic Cordilleras, is an oasis of vegetation surrounded by arid plains covering some 8,500 hectares. It is a paraje natural, or protected natural area, extending to the municipalities of Nijar, Almeria and Tabernas. To the north-west of Geral, in Aulago, in the Sierra de Filabres, the Observatorio de Calar Alto is an important German-Spanish astronomical observatory. Every year, it provides at least 200 beautiful nights of starry vision. Information: www.caha.es.
