From Montreal, if you take the Amtrak Adirondack line to New York, you will arrive at Penn Station. The train makes about 20 stops, almost all in New York State. The journey takes between 10 and 12 hours, depending on the time it takes to pass through customs at the border (American customs officers board the train to check the papers of all passengers). It's long but economical and the vineyard scenery of the Hudson Valley and the eastern Adirondack Mountains is pleasant.
