This is the cheapest way to travel. A plastic card loaded with credits is inserted into a slot before pushing the turnstile. They can be purchased at the station's ticket counters and vending machines (banknotes, credit cards and coins are accepted), as well as at stations, kiosks, pharmacies, Visitors Centers and so on. The fare is debited automatically each time you swipe your card to take the metro or bus. You then benefit from a free 2-hour metro-to-bus, bus-to-metro or bus-to-bus connection. When you transfer, the message "X fer. OK". Be smart and avoid the endless rush-hour queues by booking in the morning. When you've used up your travel credit, there's no need to buy a new card - you can top it up at the vending machines. There are several MetroCard packages to choose from, so make your calculations at the start of your trip to get the best value for your trip to the Big Apple.
