ST. MARKS HOTEL
Affordable rooms in a hotel near New York University.
Located next to New York University, this hotel is in a very lively part of the city. It is therefore ideally located if you want to go out in the evening like the students, and be in the middle of the hustle and bustle of New York City. However, the place where it is is not the noisiest, so it is an excellent compromise. The rooms would deserve a little makeover, but at that price, we won't complain. Nothing very luxurious then, but the location and exemplary cleanliness make the St. Marks Hotel a good address for small budgets.

Pros: they make your bed each day, they are very kind and helpful, they were willing to try to get me a room on the lowest level (but it turned out they were booked), we went in the winter and it was freezing cold outside but the tiny floor heater heated the space VERY well (we were sweating at some points!), no bugs, great location, hot showers. The beds are very firm, but we prefer that (I know some do not). At the end of each day, when we got back to our room after walking 8-10 miles all over the city, we would crash and sleep very well all night.
Cons: no elevator, the stairs are very steep and narrow, the place is outdated in decor (this could be spun as a positive if you love feeling and seeing the history from the building). There was no window view from our room, which was slightly disappointing. The TV appears to only have bunny-ear antenna channels from the 80s (but who cares, we were just there to sleep). We were NOT there in the summer, but I can imagine it would get pretty hot during that time of year.
Bottom line: If you are looking for an affordable, clean, and safe place to sleep, this is your place.
NOTE: They only take cash.
