Affordable rooms in a New York City nursing home.
A letter of recommendation may be required for longer stays. This Spanish Catholic hostel offers room and board to young people aged 18 to 29. The establishment is very clean (rooms are cleaned 3 times a week) and as quiet as a convent (in fact, it is run by nuns). Residents stay in rooms at very attractive rates. Once reserved for girls, the establishment is now open to young men. They do not, however, have access to all the common rooms. On the second floor, women over 29 and couples - duly married - can rent a private room with shower. However, their stay is limited to one month. One drawback is the rigid opening hours, with doors closing at 11.30pm on weekdays and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. The institution is a good base for those looking for work in New York. English is necessary for communication, and Spanish is welcome. Call for an appointment. Reservations are payable by credit card or Western Union. Final payment is in cash. It's a good idea to get in early to request a registration form, and to read carefully the rules of conduct, booking procedures, deadlines for announcing departure, and so on. Breakfast and sometimes dinner are provided.
