BEADS OF PARADISE

The store is brimming with decorative objects, trinkets, utensils, fabrics, jewelry, beads, musical instruments and retro posters, all from the west coast of Africa. It's run by Brian Kenner and Richard Meyer, two enthusiasts who explain, almost fervently, talismans, gris-gris, fetishes, the meaning of beads according to their color, the function of penile ornaments or fertility symbols in traditional Malian, Nigerian, Congolese or Ivorian cultures.
Brian, with Naomi's help, has drawn up a didactic description of these unobtainable yet inexpensive objects for customers, so that they come away feeling less stupid. Whether you buy or not, the welcome is excellent.
